Meridian does not run a competitive scramble for a fixed number of places. Applications are read as they arrive, judged against a published standard, and answered within ten working days. If you meet the standard and there is bench capacity, you are in.
What we ask for
The Academy teaches instrumentation from scratch, so no prior laboratory experience is required. What cannot be taught from scratch inside a fourteen-week term is comfort with school-level algebra — students who struggle to rearrange an equation under time pressure find the first term punishing.
All applicants
- A completed application form and personal statement of roughly 500 words.
- Evidence of secondary education in a science or mathematics subject, or equivalent.
- Confident manipulation of algebraic expressions, indices and logarithms.
- A short reference from a teacher, tutor or employer.
Where formal qualifications are missing
Applicants without conventional certificates are not turned away. Instead they sit a ninety-minute diagnostic paper covering arithmetic, algebra and interpretation of a simple data table. The paper is marked internally, sat on site or remotely, and may be retaken once after four weeks. A number of our strongest graduates entered this way.
Mature and part-time applicants
Evening and part-time routes carry the same academic standard and the same laboratory requirement. Applicants returning to study after a gap are encouraged to take the diagnostic paper regardless of qualifications, purely as a way of calibrating expectations before term starts.
Five steps from enquiry to enrolment
Enquire or visit
Optional but recommended. Open laboratory evenings run on the first Thursday of each month; you can also request a call with a department head.
Submit the application
Form, personal statement and reference. Applications are read in the order they arrive, not held until a deadline.
Diagnostic paper, if applicable
Only for applicants without conventional qualifications. Ninety minutes, sat on site or remotely, marked within a week.
Decision
Returned in writing within ten working days, with the reasoning stated. Unsuccessful applicants are told exactly what would change the answer.
Enrol and induct
Laboratory safety sign-off, tutor allocation and timetable confirmation, completed in the week before term begins.
Three intakes each year
Applications remain open until an intake fills. Late applications are rolled to the following intake rather than rejected.

What it costs, stated plainly
Tuition covers all laboratory consumables, instrument time, safety equipment and the bound notebook every student is issued. There are no separate bench fees, no charge for reagents, and no compulsory field costs.
What is not included
- Travel to and from a research placement, though the hardship fund routinely covers this.
- Optional textbooks. Every core text is held in multiple copies in the reading room.
- Replacement of deliberately or negligently damaged equipment.
Support available
Roughly one student in five receives some form of fee reduction. The Vogel Bursary is awarded on financial need alone, assessed by the Academy office and never by teaching staff, so a bursary application cannot influence how work is marked. The hardship fund covers unexpected costs mid-programme, including placement travel and equipment replacement where the cause was not negligence.
Payment by instalment is available on every route at no additional cost, and switching to instalments part-way through a programme is permitted.
Frequently asked
Do I need chemistry qualifications to apply?
No. A science or mathematics background helps, but the diagnostic route exists precisely for applicants without one. What matters is that you can work confidently with algebra — the chemistry itself is what we are here to teach.
How large are laboratory groups?
Capped at fourteen students per demonstrator, without exception. If a session would exceed fourteen it is split, even where that means running the practical twice.
Can I change department after starting?
Yes, until the end of the first term, and completed modules carry across. Transfers after that point are considered individually but usually mean repeating some practical work.
Is the research placement really compulsory?
Yes, for every route including part-time and evening. Placement length and timing are flexible; the requirement itself is not.
What if I fail an assessment?
Every assessment carries one resit at no additional charge. Where a student fails a second time, the department meets with them to agree either a repeat of the module or a transfer to a more suitable route.
Do you accept international applicants?
Yes. Qualifications from outside the country are assessed individually, and the diagnostic paper is available remotely where an equivalence cannot be established.
Is there a waiting list?
Only when an intake fills. Applicants on the list are offered a place at the next intake automatically and keep their original decision, so nobody is reassessed.
