Our Approach

Theory is where a course starts, not where it ends

A student who can rearrange an equation but has never watched a titration overshoot has learned only half the subject. Meridian is built so the two halves arrive together.

Bench time from week one

No department makes students wait a year for laboratory access. Practical sessions begin in the first fortnight, on the same instruments used in the final-year project.

Uncertainty taught as a subject

Every practical report carries an error budget. Students learn to state what they know, how well they know it, and which step in the method set the limit.

Supervision, not spectating

Laboratory groups are capped at fourteen. A demonstrator is present for every session, and the person marking your report is the person who watched you take the reading.

Departments

Four routes through the same building

Each department runs its own core sequence and shares the instrumentation suite. Students may transfer between departments at the end of the first term without losing credit.

Analytical Chemistry

Titration, chromatography, spectroscopy and the quantitative method that ties them together.

Physical Science

Thermodynamics, reaction kinetics and equilibrium, taught alongside the calorimetry bench.

Materials & Synthesis

Organic preparation, purification and structural analysis by NMR and infrared.

Research Placement

Supervised work inside a partner laboratory, assessed on a written report and defence.

Open Laboratory Evenings

On the first Thursday of each month the analytical suite is open to prospective students and their families. Sessions run from 17:30 to 20:00 and include a demonstration titration, a tour of the instrumentation room, and time with department staff. No booking is required.

The new UV-visible spectrophotometers are commissioned and available for second-year project work from the start of week three.

Placement

Twelve new partner laboratories

Placements in environmental testing and pharmaceutical quality control have been added to the spring cycle, bringing the total to 120.

Teaching

Revised error-budget guidance

The practical report template has been updated to make the propagation-of-uncertainty section explicit. Copies are with department office staff.
